Ecuador reported 70,329 positives for COVID-19 this Wednesday, the day that Quito exceeded the barrier of 10,000 cases, which represents 1,366 less than Guayaquil, the city most infected by the coronavirus in the country.

According to the official report, the positives in Quito totaled 10,035, that is, 142 more than on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Health, in Ecuador 5,158 deaths have been confirmed by COVID-19, 28 more than the day before, and 3,343 deaths “probable” from the disease.

Based on official statistics, most of the deaths confirmed by the disease were recorded in the provinces of Guayas (1,637), Manabí (695), Pichincha (588), Santa Elena (328), Los Ríos (312) and Gold (311).

Since the first case was reported on February 29, a total of 190,349 tests have been taken, including PCR and rapid tests, thanks to which 95,450 cases have been ruled out, while 5,900 patients recovered from the virus and another 9,200 were discharged hospitable.

A total of 33,439 confirmed infected are in home isolation and 1,091 are hospitalized, of which 332 have a reserved prognosis.

Of the 24 provinces of Ecuador, Guayas (whose capital is Guayaquil) tops the list of infections, with 16,682, which is equivalent to 27.18% nationwide, although that of Pichincha, whose capital is Quito, is close to the rest, registering 11,079 positives, which represents 18.05% of infections.

They are followed by Manabí with 5,351 cases, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas 2,685, Esmeraldas 2,647, Los Ríos 2,646, El Oro 2,445, Azuay 2,401, Cotopaxi 1,558, Tungurahua 1,532, Morona Santiago 1,430, Chimborazo 1,028 and Orellana which totals 1,022.

The rest of the Ecuadorian provinces, including the Galápagos territorial circumscription (100 cases), register less than a thousand confirmed, although the provinces of Santa Elena reach 999, Imbabura 962 and Bolívar, 912.

Since last month, Ecuador has been in a process of de-escalation of the restrictions in its epidemiological strategy to face the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city of Guayaquil went from red to yellow at the epidemiological traffic light on May 20, although it continues to bring together the largest number of cases in the country.

Quito started on June 3 a new stage of de-escalation, which has resulted in the partial resumption of public transport and increased commercial and labor activity on the streets of the city, inhabited by some three million people.

This situation has led to an increase in infections in the Ecuadorian capital, which remains under some limitations despite being in yellow, such as the closing of theaters and cinemas or the suspension of inter-provincial transport, among other measures.

When Quito moved to the new phase in de-escalation, the province of Pichincha accumulated 13% of cases nationwide, while today it exceeds 18%.
