EAT: Suika – Modern Japanese in Vancouver, BC

By Jsleigh14 @jsleigh14

Over the weekend, my co-worker and I went to Suika, a modern Japanese restaurant in Fairview that I’ve always wanted to try. Suika has won many Vancouver Food awards in the past few years and is the sister restaurant to King-Yo, another casual Japanese restaurant on Robson. The first thing that caught my eye in this restaurant was the awesome beer bottle chandelier on their ceiling. I wish I could have this in my apartment!

Seating Area

Oddly enough, the restaurant wasn’t busy over lunch hour and I was seated immediately. Our waitress then handed us some very cool menus with Japanese writing on them.

Lunch Menu

To quench my thirst from the summer heat, I ordered a Watermelon Cider to drink. After all, watermelons are the go-to fruit of the summer. This cider was sweet, refreshing, and tasted exactly like watermelon juice but with a kick.

As an appetizer, I ordered some Potato Wedges. Eating fries with chopsticks was a little weird, but other than that these were some very candid bites. The seasoning and the tartar sauce really made these wedges taste fantastic.

For my set lunch I got the “AAA” Beef Rib Steak Set. Like all Japanese steaks, this one was served on a hot plate with some sauce poured on top afterwards. The steak was very tender and soft and the sauce prevented it from getting too dry. The potatoes that came along were a little bland, but were decent.

My friend opted the Chicken Karage set lunch, and it was the best fried chicken I’ve tasted in a while. It wasn’t too greasy or too raw, everything was just perfect. They were also generous with the portions, which is always a plus.

Each of our set lunches came with a rice, miso soup, and some kimchi. It’s nice how they don’t forget the traditional elements of a Japanese meal.

Set Lunch

From the food to the atmosphere, Suika nailed it all. The lunch was very reasonably priced and me and my friend were both stuff when we left. The service was also very fast and efficient, we were able to leave the restaurant in just a bit over an hour’s time. This is a perfect casual restaurant to go to for a quick lunch that is bound to be satisfying. For those who are not in the Fairview area, Suika’s sister restaurant King-Yo is on Robson and provides a somewhat similar experience. I’ll definitely be back here soon to try their dinner.
