I love dim sum. It’s my favourite form of Chinese food because I like how all items are unique and come in small portions that are meant to be shared. Unfortunately, I don’t have dim sum too often because I don’t regularly have any family in town. So when my parents were around, I jumped at the opportunity to have dim sum with them. We went to Red Star Seafood Restaurant, a dim sum restaurant nearby my house that also specializes in seafood banquet dinners. It’s a fairly big restaurant that can accommodate a lot of guests at the same time.
While I’m usually more adventurous when I dine at Western restaurants, I’m fairly loyal to my all-time favourite dim sum. I started off this meal by getting an order of Shrimp Shiumai, a pork and shrimp dumpling that I’ve loved ever since I was a kid. The one here was very good and juicy, and the dough wrapping wasn’t too sticky.

Next in line was the Shrimp Har Gow. It’s another shrimp dumpling but with a different thicker and chewier wrapping. I liked this one because the wrapping tasted very good, especially dipped into some hot sauce.

Another favourite of mine is the Deep Fried Pork Dumplings. These dumplings are filled with pork and have a fried chewy crust. It was a fairly good-tasting dish, but I was a little turned off by how the crust would stick to my teeth. I’ve had better ones before that didn’t do that.

My dad ordered the Beef Balls, a dim sum that was never my favourite but I would eat anyway. These beef balls were very soft and flavourful, and the seasoning sauce on it added an interesting unexpected taste. It’s really not your regular striploin or ribs.

My mom got the Steamed Pork Spare Ribs, another dish that I really like. Unfortunately the ribs that we got were a bit fatty, but other than that I really liked how it was flavoured.

The last two shared items we got were chosen by my sister, the first being the Sticky Rice wrapped in Lotus Leaf. Not only was this dim sum fun to eat, but it was also delicious because the rice and meat inside acquired some interesting taste from the lotus leaf.

The second my sister picked was the Rice Roll with Chinese Doughnut. It’s a fun dish to eat because it’s meant to be dipped in sweet or peanut sauce. I overall liked this dim sum, but I felt that the Chinese doughnut was a little stale.

Last of all, I got my very own Seafood Dumpling. It’s a large dumpling that’s filled with shrimp, mushrooms, scallops and more. It’s served alongside a shark fin in a broth. I always like to put red vinegar in mine to add a little more taste. This seafood dumpling was extremely tasty and all the ingredients inside tasted fresh; I will definitely get this again next time I’m here.

Red Star’s dim sum was pretty good quality for what we paid, since the bill for all four of us came to just around$50. They have a wide selection of dim sum and I didn’t have any major problems with their food. The line up here can get long during weekend morning/afternoons though, but that’s typically the case for all dim sum restaurants anyways. Red Star is definitely a candid dim sum restaurant that I will return to in the future, and I look forward to trying out their franchise location in Richmond as well.
- Generally good food at reasonable prices
- Large and nice dining area
- A few misses with the food, but nothing too major
