EAT: Maurya – Indian Cuisine in Vancouver, BC

As I’ve mentioned before, I absolutely love Indian food because all their dishes are exotic and stimulate your taste buds. Last weekend, my friend Courtney (also an Indian food lover) and I went to Maurya, an Indian restaruant on Broadway. This was an exciting meal for both of us because Maurya is one of those restaurants that we always pass by but never try.

Maurya is a finer Indian restaurant in that it has a gorgeous dining room that looks like an Indian mansion.

I started off my meal with a Kingfisher Beer. It’s an Indian premium lager beer that has a strong acquired taste. Personally I didn’t love it because it is so strong, but it was worth trying.

In attempt to steer away from my usual Butter Chicken, I got the Goat Curry as my main dish instead. I made a good choice, because this curry was just appropriately spicy and had tender pieces of goat inside. However, the portion was smaller than I had expected.

Courtney got the Chicken Vindaloo, a chicken dish seasoned with roasted spices and hot gravy. Other than chicken, the vindaloo dish can also be made with lamb or beef. This dish was very tasty as well, but definitely a bit more on the spicy side. So if you’re not good with hot foods, it’d be best to ask for a milder level of spiciness.

Each of our meals came with some tasty rice and sauteed vegetables.

The best part of our meal was definitely the Naan. It was warm when we got it and it tasted fantastic while dipped into the curries we got.

I’m not too familiar with Indian desserts, so I was eager to try some out. I ordered the Kheer, a cold Indian rice pudding. It was a nice refreshing dessert to have after a meal with heavy spices.

Courtney got the Gulab Jamun, a warm traditional Indian dessert that consists of two milk patties dipped into cardamom.  This was my second time having Gulab Jamun, and although the idea of a warm dessert was odd to me, I liked this one. These sweet milk patties are super soft and melt-in-your-mouth.

Definitely not a bad meal at all here, as I have no severe complaints about the quality of any of the food. If you want an Indian meal in a nicer setting, then Maurya is the place to go. My only real thumbs down is the price and the portion sizes, since I felt like I didn’t get much food for what I paid. Especially since Indian meals are meant to be heavier, this meal was really rather light. Otherwise, this is probably one of the better Indian restaurants in Vancouver.
