EAT: Lucky’s Doughnuts in Vancouver, BC

By Jsleigh14 @jsleigh14

Last weekend after lunch, my friend Anita brought me to Lucky’s Doughnuts in Mount Pleasant. Lucky’s is a year-old doughnut/coffee shop that is famed for serving some of the city’s best doughnuts. I’m normally not the biggest fan of sweets (I can never finish a Tim Horton’s doughnut), but I was ready to have my mind changed here.

Lucky’s dining area features a vintage homestyle feel that is similar to what’s at Cafe Medina. Unlike most coffee shops, it’s too loud and crowded here to study or read. But this spot is perfect for hanging out and chatting with friends.

There’s a window in the store where you can watch how doughnuts are prepared and decorated. It’s proof that all of their doughnuts are baked fresh on spot!

Lucky’s serves 49th and Parallel coffee, the coffee that I find to be the best in town. It’s smooth and has a beany aroma that I like a lot.

I got the donut of the day, which was the Old Fashioned Glazed on my day of visit. I got this doughnut and my coffee for a combo deal at $4. This doughnut was fantastic – it tasted very fresh and not greasy at all. The glazing was appropriate, so I didn’t find it too sweet either. There’s definitely a notable difference between this and your regular coffee shop doughnut.

Anita got the PB&J doughnut, a rather interesting square doughnut that is covered with some glaze and nuts. Although it looks ordinary on the outside, the surprise is on the inside – it’s stuffed with jam! Even though there are so many sweet components to this doughnut, I still didn’t find it overpoweringly sweet. Impressive.

Lucky’s Doughnuts gave me hope that doughnuts can in fact be very delicious. This is another gem of the Mount Pleasant area and I will definitely stop by this donuterie again. Lucky’s really takes your standard “coffee and doughnuts” to the next level, so although their products are a bit pricer, they are certainly worth it.
