Richmond is a hub of good Japanese restaurants and I often have a hard time choosing which one to dine at. The other night my friend brought me to Kiyo for dinner, a Japanese restaurant that’s hidden on Cambie in Richmond. Although this restaurant isn’t anything too fancy, I liked how its inside was clean and furnished with Japanese furniture. Since it’s in a less-busy location, the restaurant was relatively quiet and we were seated immediately.

Me and my friend wanted to try a bit of everything, so we ordered quite a variety of items. Since we’re at a Japanese restaurant, we started off with a Special Sushi Combo, partly because I didn’t have the patience to pick out every piece individually. This combo was quite exotic because all the 15 sushi pieces contained raw fish. All the fish was fresh and I particularly liked the unagi roll, which is eel.

The next item we got was a chicken terriyaki. It came sizzling on a metal pan with a few other vegetables on it. The chicken was tender and its skin dipped in teriyaki sauce was particularly tasty.

I always get Gyoza whenever I have Japanese meals, but unfortunately this one wasn’t the best I’ve had. The gyozas stuck together and were hard to peel apart, and the dough was very sticky.

I ordered a Nabeyaki Udon to eat because I haven’t had these noodles in a while. It was overall very delicious and the soup base didn’t taste like it had too much MSG. The tempura that it came with were great too and I liked it dipped into the udon soup.

I felt a bit daring, so I ordered an Oyster Motoyaki to finish off my meal. Like all fried oysters, it was quite oily but extremely flavourful. It’s super rich, so it’s best not to have more than one.

Dinner at Kiyo was a good budget meal that was ultimately satisfying. It’ s much better than all-you-can-eat sushi and their food was generally not bad. The udon was particularly good and they also have a wide selection of sushi. So for a Japanese meal that doesn’t break the bank, this is definitely a good option.
- Overall food was good
- Clean and quiet atmosphere
- The gyoza wasn’t too great
- Away from city centre
