EAT: J-Paul’s – American Dining Saloon in Georgetown, Washington DC

I’ve never been to a dining saloon before, so I was excited to try out J-Paul’s while I was in Georgetown. A saloon is a historical type of American bar that was popular in the Old West. Surely J-Paul’s didn’t have cowboys walking in and out of it, but their menu is known to pay an homage to that culture.

Our meal started with some complimentary pretzels offered to us by our server. Unfortunately they were a bit cold and stiff, so I wasn’t a huge fan of them. I think I would’ve appreciated them a lot more if they were warmed up and fresher.

Then, me and my friend both got the JP Combo, the signature dish of this restaurant. This massive dish comes with half a rack of baby back ribs, a crab cake, fries, and an apple coleslaw. The ribs were definitely the best part of this meal. They were extremely soft and the meat slid off the bones effortlessly. The crab cakes were very delicious too, they were 98% real crab and tasted like so. The fries and the salad were so-so, nothing special but nothing terrible either.

J-Paul’s was a rather interesting dining experience that I quite liked. Other than the free pretzels being bad, my main dish was mostly exceptional. The ribs I had may in fact be the best I’ve had in my life! I’m happy that Dining Saloon is checked off my list of things to do, but next time I come across one in the States I’d probably want to try it too to compare. Not bad at all for a first experience though.
