The other day I had dinner with some friends at House of Tofu Soup, a Korean grill restaurant in Burnaby. I don’t usually eat Korean food, but it was neat to try something new and unexpected. My friends are regulars at this restaurant and rave about their fantastic dinner meals.
Korean food is all about sharing, so we started off with Fried Pork Dumplings. Unlike Japanese and Chinese dumplings, Korean dumplings are deep-fried rather than pan-fried. These dumplings were crispy and delicious, especially after being dipped in some sweet sauce.

Another fried dish we got was the Seafood Pancake. This pancake is crispy on the outside but chewy on the inside, and it is stuffed with seafoods such as oysters and scallops. It’s not like anything I’ve ever had before and it was definitely a good shared plate.

We also got a bunch of complimentary side dishes with out meal, which apparently is typical at Korean restaurants.
My favorite above all was the traditional Korean Kimchi.
These Mashed Potatoes were fairly neat because I totally mistakened them to be ice cream!
I got the BBQ Beef combo for my set dinner. The beef was cut into thin slices and marinated in sweet sauce. I was particularly a fan of the meat’s chewy texture and distinct flavor.
Each set dinner also comes with its own Korean Tofu Soup and rice. The soup was still boiling hot when I got it so it was able to cook a raw egg that I dropped inside. I chose to have the medium level of spiciness for this soup, which was probably a good choice because it gave just the right kick of flavor.
I’m no expert with Korean food, but I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at House of Tofu Soup. It’s best to have these meals in bigger groups because then you can try and share more different plates. In a group of four, each our bills ended up to be under $20 which I thought was very reasonable for a filling meal. This is something I wouldn’t mind doing again in the future!
