Easy to Make Flower Ball

By Simon Crowther @prestigeflower

Flower balls can be used for many different occasions and they can be made in any colour you like. Many people associate pomander balls with oranges and cloves. However, you can also make them using fresh or artificial flowers. The size of your flower ball will depend on the size of the floral foam you set in the middle.

Things you need:
  • Round, ball-shaped floral foam
  • Flowers of your choice (open flowers look the best)
  • Ribbon to suit the flowers you have selected
  • Sharp knife or pair of scissors
Steps:
  • Begin by lightly soaking your floral foam ball in some clean water. Make sure that you don't make it too saturated or it will fall apart. In addition, it will be very heavy if overfilled with water.
  • You can add flower food to the water if you want to help your flowers last longer.
  • If you are using silk flowers, you can use dry floral foam instead.
  • Take the ribbon and wrap it around the ball to the point where they meet on the other side. Twist the two pieces together slightly and pin them in place.
  • Now bring the two ends of ribbon back up to the top and twist them together again. Tie a knot so that the ribbon is secure. You want to have four evenly spaced pieces of ribbon running from one end of the ball to the other.
  • With the excess ribbon, you can make a loop for hanging.
  • Now you can begin arranging your flowers. You will need to trim the stems so that they can support the flower but are not so long that they prevent you from inserting other stems.
  • The stems should be trimmed at an angle so that they are easier to insert.
  • Start by adding flowers along the sides of the ribbon. Once you have done this, you can fill the gaps inside. You can use a single colour or multiple colours but it is usually best to stick to a single type of flower.
  • Your flowers should be arranged close together but they should not squash one another.
  • Once you are done, you can add some accessories if you like. Think about the season or the occasion you are celebrating.

Another important note to remember is to use a strong fabric ribbon for your pomander ball. If you use a paper ribbon, the wet foam will cause it to disintegrate. Paper ribbons can be used if you are hanging artificial flowers but the fabric ribbons look far more elegant.
