Easter Attacks: Dereliction of Duty Charge Sheets for Five Senior Police Officers

Five senior police officers have been charged for dereliction of duty despite receiving advance  information regarding the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday according to information from the Police Headquarters.

The Police Headquarters revealed that two Senior Deputy Inspector Generals of Police, two Senior Superintendents of Police and an Assistant Superintendent of Police have been charged.

The charge sheets for not preventing the Easter attack have been given to Senior Deputy Inspector General of Central Province Lalith S. Patinayake, who was working as the Deputy Inspector General of Colombo at the time of the attack. Senior DIG Deshbandu Tennakoon, in charge of Western Province, who was working as DIG of Western Northern area at that time.

Director of Police Welfare Sanjeeva Bandara who was working as Senior Superintendent of Police in Colombo North Division at that time. Senior Superintendent of Police Sisila Kumara, who was working as Superintendent of Police in Negombo, who is currently under suspension and former OIC of Katana Police.

Charge sheets were also recommended to Nandana Munasinghe, who was working as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province and Chandana Athukorala, the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Negombo Division, but since these officers have now retired from the police service, they have not been given charge sheets.

Police information revealed that some of the officers who have been issued charge sheets have appealed to the National Police Commission in this regard. Accordingly, the police information further revealed that the Police Commission has inquired from the Police Headquarters about the facts that led to the issue of charge sheets against the officers.
