For thirty-five year old Charlotte Emory, leaving her husband seems to offer the only way out from the mundaneness of every day life's earthly possessions and emotional complications. In the bank, she withdraws enough money to escape a life and a marriage gone sour. But Charlotte is about to escape in a way she never expected, as a young bank robber takes her hostage, and they head south for Florida in a stolen car.

I've read a few of the author's book and am a fan of her work. My digital library recently ordered in a bunch of her titles which got me interested in her work again. This is a short book, more of a novella and so much is packed into it that it felt like a much longer piece of work. Tyler uses a first person narrator, Charlotte. I really liked her voice. The book moves between the present with Charlotte mixed up in unexpected dramatic events and the past showing her courtship, marriage and her growing dissatisfaction. The book is really about Charlotte and her life and getting involved in the robbery and subsequent events is exactly what she needs to help her realise what she really wants. A compelling read.
