A 16-year-old male student has died when he was buried under a bank of soil which fell on to a house in Moragahamula, Medadumbara, Teldeniya due to heavy rain.
The Teldeniya Police said that the incident took place at about 4.30 a.m. yesterday (20). The deceased was a student named W. A. Gayan.
The student had been sleeping in a room below the mound of soil and his grandparents who had been in an adjacent room had also been injured in the landslide and admitted to the Meda Mahanuwara Hospital.
Heavy rains were being experienced from yesterday (20) afternoon in several areas of the Kandy District. This accident had taken place with the torrential rain experienced in the Medadumbara, Moragahamula area when a mound of soil above this house had slid down in an earth slip.
It is reported that the student who was buried in the landslide had been rescued by area residents with great effort but had passed away when he was being taken to the hospital. The Teldeniya Police are conducting investigations.
