D. S. Senanayake (DSS) College recorded the biggest victory in the Inter-Schools Under-20 Premier Trophy Knock-Out Rugby Tournament quarter-finals worked off at the Royal College Sports Complex in Reid Avenue during the weekend.
DSS, who have already qualified to play in next year’s ‘A’ Division League after a successful Segment ‘B’ Tournament produced an outstanding performance to annihilate their traditional rivals Mahanama College 53-0.
In fact, this fixture, which was also considered as the 14th annual Battle of the Golds encounter turned out to be a completely one-sided contest as DSS took a commanding 22-0 lead at half time and added a further 31 points in the second half to complete a rousing victory.
DSS will now take on Maliyadeva College in the semi-finals this week after the lads from Kurunegala defeated Sri Sumangala College, Kandy 31-12 in their quarter-final fixture played at Havelock Park.
Meanwhile, Zahira College will face Thurstan College in the Premier Trophy Knock-Out Tournament second semi-final on September 4 at Havelock Park. The Zahirians, who have also earned promotion to the ‘A’ Division League next year, continued with their excellent form and defeated Lumbini MV 36-5 in their quarter-final match played at the Royal Sports Complex.
In contrast, Thurstan made it to the Premier Trophy Knock-Out semi-finals through the courtesy of a walk over from Prince of Wales College.
The Thurstanites also had a good League Tournament in Segment ‘B’ where they finished in second place while losing only a solitary game.
