Pickin Chickens is a family game by Drumond Park and seems to be geared towards the younger players. It is really easy with a recommended age guide of 4 years and over.
Rather than a standard board, this game is played on a spinning plastic disc which resembles a field. On the field are several chicken coops. Each player spins in turn and after each spin, all players lift a coop.
Underneath the coops will be an image. This will either be a chicken in one of four colours or a farmer. If a coloured chicken is revealed then the player gets that chicken to place on the chicken card. If it's a farmer then they get the farmer card which is then passed on to the next person who finds it. Then the next player spins the board.
The aim of the game is to find all four coloured chickens to fill your card. The obstacles being - finding a colour you already have under the coops and "The Fox" - The fox sits in the middle of the game, cleverly hidden away inside the tree trunk. Every so often he will catch players removing coops and taking chickens and he will pop up randomly and scare players away. If he pops up then all players have to put a chicken back. However if a player has the farmer card then this saves them from the fox.
It is a really easy play game with minimal set up. Izebella is not quite 4 yet but loves it and is constantly asking to play. She is already really good at colours and matching so did not really need to be taught the rules. Yes she is so clever. However as the chickens need to be matched to the cards it may help a little with colour matching skills.
The fox at first did scare Izebella slightly with its randomness at popping out but she's fine with it now. The only slight problem I had with the game is that the coops can sometimes be tricky to get in place and may fly out when spinning. It is a nice easy, fun game for younger children.
Pickin Chickens should be in most toy stores this month and costs £19.99.
