Last week I made the journey from California to Atlanta, GA to participate in Dragon Con 2011 and see some of the True Blood cast. The weekend was very successful, having garnered many photos and videos from all of the panels I attended. I also got to meet the cast. More on that experience can be found here.
The first day of any big multi-day event is always intense because you have to find your way around, adjust to crowds, and so on. Thanks to my experiences at Comic Con I had an idea of what to expect. Dragon-Con is a smaller event than Comic Con and is spread throughout five different hotels in downtown Atlanta with three of the four I was in having connecting walkways between them. This ended up being great for me because everything I needed and wanted to do was in one of these hotels.
My True Blood coverage started with the first of three different panels. I attempted to try to tweet during it but I gave up because getting pictures and videos was more important. So for this first day, Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pamela Sywnford de Beaufort), Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux), Jim Parrack (Hoyt Fortenberry), and Southern Vampire Mysteries writer Charlaine Harris were present.
The main theme in this True Blood panel seemed to be the characters, their development, and how this makes the show more than just one about supernatural creatures. Jim Parrack commented on the subject by discussing what he and co-star Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby) decided to do about the one year gap their characters had at the start of the season.
According to him, they spent several days talking about what happened in that year. Hoyt and Jessica started out very optimistic toward their relationship. They were going to make it despite those who said they wouldn’t. That is until Hoyt’s mother Maxine (Dale Raoul) tried to shoot Jessica. Though she came away from the incident unscathed, Hoyt became even more protective over Jessica to the point of being overprotective. This then caused the relationship to become strained overtime which led to the eventual destruction of the relationship.
Joe Manganiello opened up about how he did all kinds of research about wolves in order to play Alcide; how they behaved, the pack mentality and so on. But he found that his character ended up being surprisingly more human than he expected so his perception had to change.
Kristin Bauer van Straten spoke about how her goal is always to have Pam be fierce but she’s never quite sure if she’s done it right especially when she’s had to wait eight hours to do a scene and lost the ability to care at 3am.
