Two progressive (i.e., very liberal) organizations, Move On and Democracy for America, have decided that Hillary Clinton is not liberal enough for them -- and they have started a movement (promising to spend a million dollars) to draft Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) to run for president in 2016. Senator Warren has said repeatedly and emphatically that she is not going to run for president in 2016 (and supports a Clinton candidacy), but these groups ignore that and still think that can force Warren to run.
I am also a strong supporter of Senator Warren. She is one of the two best senators in the United States Senate (with Bernie Sanders of Vermont being the other). But I think it is silly and disrespectful to ignore Senator Warren's wishes -- and can only serve to divide the Democratic Party. It is important to keep a Republican extremist out of the White House in the next presidential election, and Hillary Clinton is our best chance to accomplish that.
How successful has the movement been. It is obvious that they have not convinced Senator Warren to change her mind, but have they been successful in getting ran-and-file Democrats to get on board? Have they been able to cut into Hillary Clinton's base of support?
An ABC News / Washington Post Poll tries to answer that. They surveyed a random national sample of 346 Democrats between December 11th and 14th (and their survey had a 6 point margin of error).
The results should make Hillary Clinton happy -- because it shows she has not been hurt at all. Her support remains high whether we are talking about Democrats in general, liberal Democrats, or very liberal Democrats. In fact, her support is virtually the same among all three groups. If anyone has been hurt by the "draft Warren" movement, it is Joe Biden. His support drops from 14% among all Democrats to only 6% among very liberal Democrats (and 8 point drop), and Warren's numbers rise by that same amount among the two groups.
Hillary Clinton still looks golden. The nomination is hers if she wants it, and that is the opinion of Democrats in all groups (including the very liberal).
