Veteran Artist and senior Lecturer Dr. W. A. Ariyasena passed away at 92 yesterday.

Born in 1930, Ariyasena is well-known by the Sri Lankans and those who are familiar with the painting field for his contribution to the aesthetic sector.

Ariyasena is the person who designed the Ceylon Government Crest, the symbol of authority which is also known as the Mace, Sri Lanka Scout Emblem and the insignias of the Sri Lanka Army and the Navy.

He has also designed several stamps including the S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike Commemoration stamp of 1957, The Scouts Golden Anniversary stamp of 1962, 1857-1957 centenary of the Postal Department and the Royal Visit of 1954.

He was awarded the Governor-General’s Prize for the Best Painting twice in 1954 and 1956. In 2006, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his continued contribution in both education and expression via paint.

W.A. Ariyasena, who has over 70 years of experience has guided many renowned artistes in the country.
