National People’s Power (NPP) Gampaha District Member of Parliament Asoka Sapumal Ranwala has been unanimously appointed as the new Speaker of Parliament.
He was nominated by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya at the commencement of the inaugural session of the tenth Parliament. The proposal was seconded by Minister Vijitha Herath. Meanwhile National People’s Power (NPP) Colombo District Member of Parliament, Dr. Rizvie Salih has been unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
He was nominated by Minister of Health and Media Nalinda Jayatissa, while the proposal was seconded by Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Paulraj. Moreover Gampaha District NPP MP Hemali Weeraseekara was elected as the Deputy Chairperson of Committees. Weeraseekara secured her seat in the Parliament as she polled 66,737 votes in the Gampaha District in the 2024 General Election.
Speaker of Parliament Asoka Ranwala announced today (21) that President Anura Kumara Dissanayke has officially recognised Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition. 
The announcement was made during the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament, where the Speaker conveyed the President’s communications to the House.
