One of the larger aircraft in the Travis AFB Aviation Museum collection is this Douglas C-133 Cargomaster. This large cargo aircraft was the USAF’s only production turboprop-powered aircraft used for strategic airlift, later replaced by the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy in 1971. After retirement, this aircraft went to a private owner and was used to transport components for the Alaskan Pipeline. With more than 17,000 flight hours in the books, plans were made to fly this aircraft from Alaska back to Travis. In August 2008, the last flying C-133 touched down during the 2008 Travis Air Expo. First flown in 1956, only fifty would be built. Nine were lost in crashes and one was destroyed in a ground fire. Seven airframes are known to have survived.
