DoT Busted 5000 Fake SIM Cards Involved in Criminal Activity

DoT On the orders of Department of Telecom (Department of Telecom), Bihar Police has unearthed a huge fake SIM card racket running in the state. Police has blacklisted 2,387 SIM card selling points. At the same time, a total of 5,000 mobile numbers have also been closed in Bihar-Jharkhand Telecom Circle. The Telecom Department had received information about criminal activities being carried out through these SIM cards. Issuing a statement, DoT’s Special Director General Telecom in Bihar-Jharkhand Telecom Circle said that 5,000 mobile numbers of Bihar and Jharkhand have been blocked, which were being used for criminal activities.

2387 PoS blacklisted

In his statement, the Special Director of DoT said that SIM cards of 2,387 Point of Sales (PoS) have been blacklisted. DoT issued instructions to the mobile operators to block these SIM cards within a week and informed them about the criminal activities being carried out by them. Telecom operators are preparing to take legal action against these fake PoS.

Additional Director General (ADG) of Bihar Police said that this action has been taken on the basis of investigation done by DoT. EOU will take legal action against the offenders involved in this. In this regard, the Bihar Police has issued instructions to the SPs of all the districts and asked the retail dealers to follow all the parameters of SIM card registration.

The police is now probing the angle of misuse of the SIM cards issued by the people through fake documents. Police suspect that these fake SIM cards may have been used for cybercrime. Apart from this, the SPs of all the districts have been ordered to monitor and check the documents used to buy the SIM card.

The ADG also informed that the police of the neighboring states are also being contacted in this matter. Have these criminals got SIM cards issued outside Bihar using fake documents?

Earlier also 2.25 lakh numbers were deactivated

Earlier DoT has deactivated 2.25 lakh mobile phone numbers of Bihar and Jharkhand in the month of April. These SIM cards were issued on the basis of fake documents. Telecom companies had blacklisted 517 PoS retailers in this matter. According to reports, FIRs have been lodged in this matter in several districts of Bihar.

DoT has done facial verification of about 87 crore SIM card subscribers in India these days to curb cybercrime. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used for this. For this, a partnership has been made with the Advance Computing Center Development of the Central Government. Facial data of 7 crore subscribers of Bihar and Jharkhand has been verified.
