Start delivery on DoorDash request has launched a digital store to sell household items, as well as the types of things you might find in a convenience store. So, chips, ice cream, spices and packaged foods from local restaurants. Called DashMart, the convenience store is available in eight cities in the United States and plans to launch in other cities in the coming months.

These are essentially micro-fulfillment centers that carry around 2,000 items where employees of the DashMart warehouse collect and pack orders, so delivery workers, known as Dashers, come to collect the order and deliver to the customer.

The move to the virtual store comes a few months after DoorDash collaborated with over 1,800 convenience stores across the country to better respond to customer needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the meantime, DoorDash has been carefully scrutinized for its working practices, particularly during this global health crisis. Last month, San Francisco district attorney Chesa Boudin sued DoorDash for "mistakenly classifying employees as independent contractors." In the complaint, Boudin claims that DoorDash incorrectly classified his workers and, in doing so, engages in unfair working practices.

In a statement to ProWellTech at the moment, DoorDash said it supported its employees throughout the pandemic by offering them security equipment, telemedicine and more. DoorDash has also long been a supporter of retaining its workers classified as independent contractors.

Voting this November is Prop 22, a measure supported by DoorDash, Uber, Lyft and Instacart, which aims to make drivers and delivery workers for these companies exempt from a new state law that classifies them as W-2 employees.

However, a report conducted by the Partnership for worker families that vote yes on Prop 22 "would create a permanent subclass of workers in a growing sector of the economy".
