Donald Trump says he launched NFTs for the ‘Sort of Cute’ Art

Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, said that he started his NFT collection because he liked the art and thought the pictures of him were “sort of cute.”

In a recent interview with One America News, the twice-impeached former Commander-in-Chief and former TV host said that Trump Digital Trading Cards were not an investment but rather an artistic project.

Trump released non-fungible token (NFT) trading cards earlier this month, promoting them as a “major announcement” beforehand. People questioned the $99 Polygon NFTs when they were released, with several Trump supporters declaring they would not purchase them and others seeing watermarks from stolen stock photos on the images.

“I loved the art,” Trump said in the interview. “I’m looking at this stuff and I’m saying, ‘that’s sort of cute, that might sell.’ It set like a record. It’s been incredible.”

The digital trading cards were touted as showcasing “amazing art of [Trump’s] life and career” and represented him in various stances and costumes, including as an astronaut, a cowboy, and a superhero.

When asked why he would choose to launch NFTs when the entire crypto market was down, Trump said he “didn’t view it as an investment,” but said again that he “thought they were cute.”

Last year, NFTs, which are tokens tied to digital (and sometimes physical) things like art or music, became very popular. But now that the crypto market is in a bear market, people are less interested in the assets.

The purchasers were offered benefits such as a meal or a meet-and-greet with the previous boss. People have lost interest in the tokens as Trump’s NFT collection sold out in one day, causing the floor price to decrease.

According to CryptoSlam, the collection has generated $9.6 million in secondary transactions to date.

Trump, who served as president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, stated in November that he would compete for office again in 2024.
Last year at this time, his wife Melania Trump released a Solana NFT. A few days later, Trump responded by appreciating his partner’s proposal but noting that cryptocurrencies were “very dangerous.”
