Don’t Move (Netflix)- A Spooky Season Review
San Raimi jumped on as producer to help boost the profile of this horror/thriller. I can see why, from the stance that there’s certainly something there, but at the same time, the film does constantly overplay its hand. The plot of the movie revolves around a woman who meets up with a guy who is actually a serial killer, and he kidnaps her, with plans to do what I’m sure he’s done a dozen times before. He has injected her with a paralytic, but before the paralytic takes full effect, our final girl crashes the car and starts to run. Then, stumble, crawl, and eventually lay still hoping not to be found.
This guy is like the freaking terminator though. Even though he’s somewhere he didn’t plan on being, and just survived a car crash himself, he’s like some hunting dog or something. That’s what makes the film less interesting, is that he seems so brazenly open about his assuredness in finding her that the film just feels like we’re waiting for him to happen to walk directly to her location. Meanwhile, she has the worst timing in the world, from landing in an ant hill, to having to worry about being run over by a lawnmower. If she found refuge in a dormant volcano, I’m sure it would explode.
But, the audio description through all of this was pretty great. She’s constantly losing body function, and spends a chunk of the film unable to move. It should be a tour de force from an actress, and perhaps if Raimi was directing, this film would have supported it. Instead, we’ve got this dude who could find the lost city of Atlantis on her trail, and we see him constantly, making this far less interesting. Killers are much scarier when you don’t see them coming.
This is on Netflix, so if you need a decent, but not great thriller, you could do worse.
Final Grade: B
