Don Jon (2013)

By Newguy

logoDirector: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Writer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Screenplay)

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne Headly, Brie Larson, Rob Brown

Plot: A New Jersey Jon (Gordon-Levitt) dedicated to his family, friends and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love Barbara (Johansson) who has an unrealistic view on love from romantic comedies.

Verdict: Romantic comedy about maturing

Story: We always see clash of personalities in romantic comedy, this offers a more realistic clash with a man who likes watching porn, and a woman who believes Hollywood films are real life. Watching how things pan out between then it is unusual to see the man be the only one to grow while the woman fails to see any errors in her way. The bond between the friends is fun and true when guys are out drinking. The end of the story may leave you feeling a little mislead by the way the story is sold to you but it does reward you in the idea that you have to make a few mistakes to learn who you really are. (9/10)

Actor Review: Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Jon a guy who has many things he is loyal too, but it is his unhealthy love of porn that will be change what is important to him. Great performance giving a real guy’s guy role where he ends up doing whatever it takes to make Barbara happy. (9/10)

Actor Review: Scarlett Johansson – Barbara the New Jersey girl who is all about finding true love like in a movie, plays out as a bit of a tease too. Good performance that is perfect for Scarlett. (9/10)

Actor Review: Julianne Moore – Esther a class mate from night class with Jon who helps him learn the error of his ways. Good performance in what looks like a small supporting role that turns into an important role. (8/10)

Director Review: Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Great direction, writing and actor showing that his talent just keeps growing and growing. (9/10)

Comedy: Some very funny moments, mostly including the Jon and his mates. (8/10)

Romance: Works well to show how easily romance has been conflicted with the new world image. (8/10)

Believability: The characters are all believable but the story of the difference seems a bit too much. (6/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Settings: Good settings used to make each scene works too add to the story. (8/10)

Suggestion: When it comes to rom com I find it hard to suggest too many but this one works well but I feel it is one for the guys to enjoy rather than the ladies. (Guys Watch)

Best Part: The guys on drinks each scene is funny.

Worst Part: It is a bit short.

Funniest Scene: One of Jon’s friends get a phone number and saves the name as ponytail.

Trivia: Barbara was written for Scarlett Johansson.

Oscar Chances: No

Tagline: Todos queremos un final feliz (We all want a happy ending)

Overall: Romantic Comedy With a Twist
