As a full-fledged member of your family, your dog should spend most of his days and all of his nights inside your home. If you’re fortunate to have a fenced backyard, it’s recommended to install a doggy door to allow your well-behaved dog free access to indoors and outdoors while you’re away. A doggy door allows your dog to check out what’s happening outside – safely. And it melts away your worries about racing home in time to let your dog out to go potty.

Select a doggy door that best meets your type of home construction. Various models can be installed in existing doors or walks, or set-up as separate panels that act as extensions to sliding glass doors. These come in handy if you rent instead of own your home because you won’t be making major changes to the structure of the building.

Once your dog is outside, you should designate one special area in which your dog should do his business. With very little training, your dog will go to this one area to relieve himself. This makes cleanup easier and the risk of disease transmission less likely.

Lastly, always make sure your dog has access to water outdoors. If your dog is a bowl-spiller, place a large, heavy rock in the center of the bowl to keep it anchored. Better yet, provide a couple of water bowls to ensure an adequate supple. Always provide fresh water daily.
