Dog Hydration on the Go, a Review of the H2O4K9 Water Bottle

By Kenin Bassart @Constantramble

Dog Hydration is very important outdoors.Keeping your dog hydrated is an extremely important part of ensuring that your dog is happy and healthy while both at home and on the road. Doing it at home is rather easy, just keep a bowl of fresh water  around (not the toilet bowl) and they’ll drink when they’re thirsty. Doing it on the road though, can present any dog traveler with some tough challenges. Thankfully, H2O4K9 stepped up with a unique  and innovative dog water bottle to make sure your dog stays hydrated while you travel.

When on the road or just out on a hike with our doggies, finding a way to give them water can be pretty messy and sometimes challenging. Typically you either have to hope to find a rest area with a doggy water fountain, or tote around a messy bowl and water bottle. Even those  handy collapsing bowls can become a hassle once they’ve been used and are covered in dog slobber. There have been times where we’ve forgotten the bowl on a hike and have had to resort to giving the dogs water out of a river.

This is not the easiest, safest, or cleanest way to give your dog water !

When we travel, we’re always looking for simple solutions that require as little hassle as possible. So we were pretty excited when we came across the H2o4K9 stainless steel dog water bottle and were given one to test and review.

The H2O4K9 water bottle was the first dog water bottle we’ve come across that solves the dog hydration problem with a single product. I really don’t like carrying extra gear when on the road, and I truly don’t care for having to clean up dog slobber.  With this, the water bottle cap serves as a bowl, so it solves both of my biggest problems at the same time.

Keeping Dogs Hydrated

Punkin was pretty thirsty on this hike

So how’d we like it? Well I loved the fact that it’s stainless steel and really durable. I’ve dropped my sample a few times already and it still looks new. It’s not too heavy to carry on hikes and it has a convenient clip to hook onto my belt or backpack.  The cap/bowl is actually patented, because of how convenient it is for both large and small dogs to drink from. You just turn it one way for a big dog like Zoe, and then reverse it for a little guy like Punkin.

Zoe took right to drinking from it.

Once your pooches are done drinking you can take any left over water and just pour it back in the bottle. This helps conserve water and reduce waste. I have to admit, when I first saw the cap I was worried about the idea of drool and slobber collecting in the lid, or water dripping down the side of the bottle. Interestingly, when you pour water back in, it ends up pretty dry. The one or two times that is hasn’t a quick shake of the cap took care of the excess. Want to see how well it works? Take a look at this short video to see Punkin and Zoe both use it.

So are there any negatives? I personally think the included clip could stand to be more heavy duty (I replaced ours with standard carabiner) for long term use. Also, It does take a minute or two of training your dog to drink from the little cap, and it seems to work more intuitively for large breeds than small breeds. The positives of this product though, far outweigh any negatives I could see. Overall I found this dog hydration system to be both affordable and durable. It has quickly become one of the items we’ve added to our doggie travel bag.
