Dog elected mayor in Minnesota town

The question in the tiny town of Cormorant, Minnesota isn't “who let the dogs out?” The question is who let the dogs in- to politics that is.

Minnesota politics is not without other strange occurrences- 5-year old Bobby Tufts recently finished up a two year turn as mayor of Dorset, Minnesota. However the public was shocked to find out that Cormorant residents had elected a dog as their first mayor.

Duke is a 7-year old Great Pyrenees who won the vote “by a landslide” in Cormorant- home to just 12 residents as was reported Wednesday, August 13th by ABC News. Those 12 residents each paid a dollar to cast their vote in the town’s first mayoral election that will surely go down in dog history.

The farm dog will be officially sworn in as the town’s mayor on the weekend at the local fair. At seven years of age he is older than Bobby Tufts was when he was elected mayor- bobby was only three- but one must remember that Duke is 50 in dog years.

Duke’s opponent Richard Sherbrook seems to have faith in his newly elected mayor in an interview with ABC News.

“There’s no question that he’ll do a good job representing the community,” said Sherbrook.

Sherbrook- owner of a general store in Cormorant- voted for Duke himself and is a fan of the dog.
“I’m going to back the dog 100 percent,” Sherbrook said. “He’s a sportsman and he likes to hunt. He’ll really protect the town.”

Duke has a reputation for roaming around and slowing down cars that drive too fast through town. After Duke was elected he received five hours of grooming, a hat and a mayoral sash.

"He doesn't know how to handle this publicity,” Tricia Maloney said in an interview with Fox News. "He won by a landslide. Poor Richard Sherbrook that owns the Cormorant Store, he didn't even have half as many votes as Duke did."

Instead of a salary Duke will receive free pet food for the year from Tuffy’s Pet Food. Voters predict that the dog will keep their town safe and secure in the coming year.
