Dog Blindness Or Impaired Vision

Dogs can suffer from a range of illnesses, many of which can be treated successfully. To give you dog the best chance of recovery, you may seek veterinary advice and treatment quickly, and faithfully follow all instructions given regarding medication and care. The vet will be able to treat your dog more effectively if you can provide as many details as possible about him. Details to provide your vet with are as follows:

  • How long they have been present
  • How you dog’s usual behavior is affected

One of the most common dog illnesses is blindness or impaired vision.  There are degrees of impaired vision’ the term “blind” is usually only used when the dog can see nothing at all, or perhaps just light and dark.

Symptoms:

You dog may bump into furniture and objects for no apparent reason, or have difficulty finding you – especially if you’re in a group of people. It’s also quite common for an elderly dog to have more problems with his eyesight in bright light and in darkness, and he may be reluctant to venture out at such times.

Causes:

A variety – from injury to hereditary diseases and conditions. As dogs age, it’s quite common for a bluish color to appear in the eyes as the lens of the eye deteriorates.

What to do:

Any dog showing symptoms of failing eyesight should be taken to a vet without delay.

Treatment:

This depends upon the cause, but many cases of total blindness are untreatable.
