Tissamaharama Police yesterday morning (9) arrested a doctor who assaulted and injured a 93-year-old grandmother and obstructed the police officers who were on duty.
A 42-year-old doctor named Virinchige Gayan Ranasinghe, a resident of Diyasaya, Tissamaharama, who works in the outpatient department of Debarawewa Primary Hospital has been arrested.
The suspected doctor attacked and injured his 93-year-old grandmother (the doctor’s mother’s mother) on June 7 due to a land dispute.
The 93-year-old woman Dona Timara Hettiarachchi, who was beaten, filed a complaint with the Thissamaharama Police about the incident and was admitted to Debarawewa Primary Hospital for treatment. According to the report received regarding the incident, a team of officers of Tissamaharama police had gone to the suspected doctor’s house for an investigation. There, the concerned doctor abused the police officers who went to investigate the complaint with harsh words and obstructed their duty.
The suspect doctor has been arrested by the Tissamaharama police on the charges of obstructing the duties of the police officers and assaulting the 93-year-old grandmother. He is scheduled to be produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court.Tissamaharama Police is conducting further investigations under the instructions of the Tangalle Division SSP.
