I’m convinced the nuns in Portugal centuries ago were a very creative lot, considering how many different sweets they made from just three ingredients: eggs, flour, and sugar.

Yes, that’s the entire ingredient list for Doces do Freixo from Marco de Canaveses. Founded in 1819, the traditional sweets by Casa dos Lenteirões originate from the recipes of 17th century nuns. You can see more of their fare on their Facebook page, where I see they’ve now expanded their supply to Mercado do Bom Sucesso in Porto.
