‘Do Not Eat’ Warning for Herbs and Spices That May Be Contaminated

By Elliefrost @adikt_blog

The Food Standards Agency has issued a 'do not eat' warning for a long list of herbs and spices that may be contaminated. nfinity Foods Co-operative Ltd is recalling several herb and spice products because they contain mustard, which is not declared on the label.

This means that the products pose a potential health risk to anyone with a mustard allergy. Mustard is recognised as one of the 14 major allergens that must be declared on food labels under UK law, indicating that it is a significant allergen for some people.

Mustard is one of the most common spice allergies and can cause symptoms such as anaphylaxis, oral allergy syndrome, gastrointestinal symptoms, asthma, and conjunctivitis.

The main allergen in yellow mustard is "Sin a 1", and in brown mustard it is "Bra j 1". These allergens are not easily broken down by the digestive tract and can still be present even when the mustard is cooked. People with a mustard allergy can also be allergic to rapeseed and other products from the Brassicaceae family, such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, turnips and rapeseed.

Infinity Foods Co-operative Ltd is recalling the products from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, who will inform their members about the recall. The company has also sent out a point of sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and what to do if they have purchased the products.

If you have purchased any of the products and are allergic to mustard, do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store where you purchased them for a full refund. For further questions, please contact [email protected].

Sometimes there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. In this case it may be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). Sometimes foods need to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect, or if there is some other risk of food allergy. Where there is a risk of food allergy, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.
