  • Today DJI officially unveiled the DJI OM 4, the company's newest smartphone gimbal.
  • As the successor to the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, the gimbal looks the same, but introduces a magnetic clip.
  • The gimbal is priced at $ 150 and is available now.

Last year, DJI impressed us with the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, the company's first foldable smartphone gimbal. Today the company introduces the follow-up product DJI OM 4. The main feature is a new magnetic clip assembly that makes it easy to attach and detach your phone.

You will likely notice a slight name change between the two devices. Although DJI seems to have forgotten the name Osmo Mobile for its gimbals, the nickname "OM" isn't too far off. In any case, the OM 4 is the direct successor to the Osmo Mobile 3.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 3 has completely redesigned the look and feel of the company's smartphone gimbals. With the DJI OM 4, however, the design of the Osmo Mobile 3 is carried over. That makes this upgrade much more iterative than its predecessor.

Aside from the magnetic mount, which we'll get to in a moment, there aren't any major differences between this and the 2019 model. DJI is promoting improved motors that allow larger / heavier phones to be handled and some new software features. Overall, however, this appears to be a slightly tweaked Osmo Mobile 3.

That's not a bad thing at all as the Osmo Mobile 3 is one of the best smartphone gimbals out there. If you don't necessarily love the magnetic mechanism described in the next section, you might not need to upgrade.

A magnetic clip and a magnetic phone ring

In the sales packaging of the DJI OM 4 you will find a magnetic smartphone clip and a magnetic smartphone ring. The clip attaches to your phone in the usual way by pinching and holding it on both sides. Since the clip itself is magnetically attached to the arm of the gimbal, you can simply pull the entire clip off and use your phone as normal. Then you can turn it back on whenever you want to record a video.

Similarly, the smartphone magnetic ring eliminates the need for the clip and allows you to attach your phone directly to the arm. Of course, you always have to decide whether you want the ring to stick on the back of your phone (or your phone case). We expect only hardcore video content creators to go for this one or those who use a smartphone for videos only and then a different one as their daily driver.

You can find more information about the DJI OM 4 in our practical photos. Stay tuned for our upcoming review of the device as we will take a closer look at whether or not this gimbal is a good buy over the Osmo Mobile 3.
