How to make your first macrame earrings

To start, you’ll need a few supplies.

Gather together:

  • some cotton cord (at least 1mm thick),
  • some earring hooks or even better, hoops,
  • and scissors.

Optionally, get some beads or charms if you want to add some extra accessories.

You’ll also need a piece of cardboard or plastic to which you will hang your earring hook or hoop. Or you can can use another piece of that cord to fasten that earring piece.

If you don’t do macrame often, improvize! Fasten your soon-to-be earrings with a cord to the back of your kitchen chair or to a furniture knob.

I’ll paste a Youtube tutorial that I liked the best here below. It’s very clear with a step by step guide on how to make macrame hoop earrings. It shows in detail every step of the work as well as how to make the knots.

Now it’s time to get started on your macrame earrings.

  1. Cut the cord

Begin by cutting two lengths of cord that are each twice as long as you want your finished earrings to be.

For example, if you want an 8-inch long earring, cut two 16-inch lengths of cord. Next, fold the two lengths in half and tie a knot at the center point so that all four strands are gathered together.

  2. Make your first knot

When making macrame earrings, you can start directly on the earring component. It’s simpler than transferring the finished macrame to an earring hoop!

So, wrap the cord around the earring-piece and hold it in place with your fingers. Using your thumb and forefinger, separate the four strands into two groups of two strands each.

To create the basic knot pattern for your earrings, tie the two groups together with an overhand knot. Pull the knots tight and repeat this step until you have reached your desired length.

  3. Finish off

Once you have reached your desired length, it’s time to tie off your earrings. Take the two loose ends of cord and tie them together into an overhand knot. Trim off any excess cord and thread one earring hook onto each end of the cord. Now your basic macrame earrings are complete!

If you want to add some extra flair to your earrings, consider adding some beads or charms. To do this, simply thread your beads or charms onto one of the cords before tying off your earrings. You can also create different patterns with multiple colors of cord or even add tassels for a more bohemian look.

Macrame earrings are an easy and fun way to add a little handmade style to your wardrobe. With a few simple supplies and a bit of patience, you can create something unique that’s sure to turn heads! Whether you keep them for yourself or give them as gifts, macrame earrings are sure to be a hit with all your fashionable friends.
