Ahh it’s Sunday and more winter holidays are fast approaching and while kids were excitedly counting down each day until the start of Christmas morning, now they can count down to something else besides the dread of returning to school . For children, a break from school in the middle of winter can be a much needed time of relaxation and brain rest but for parents? Winter break can seem a little overwhelming. Sure, you always enjoy your children and snap up the precious extra time together but the change in your schedule can leave the house feeling a little chaotic in, what already tends to be, a very busy time of the year.
Have no fear! There are so many excellent and easy activities that can be done around the house both in preparation for Christmas and to keep hands busy! And, as an ice cream blog, hopefully we can come up with some delicious options that even the parents will enjoy. Check out our small list below!
Snow Ice Cream: If you haven’t already seen our post on snow ice cream, it is definitely worth a perusal. It is easy to make, fun to serve, and will encourage the kids to get out of the house for a much needed break.
Paint Can Ice Cream: Don’t write us off just yet! This is not a treat that includes non-edible materials. Clean paint cans can be purchased (or sometimes donated) from local hardware stores and make a great basic material for a manual ice cream maker that the kids can shake, rattle, and roll.
Holiday Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches: Also mentioned on our “Top Ten Places To Eat Ice Cream,” holiday cookies make excellent and festive ice cream sandwiches. You can even roll the edges in leftover sprinkles for a colorful touch.
And if none of these options are appealing, you can always jazz up an end-of-the-night treat by making it a “Snowman Sundae”
Snowman Sundaes
You’ll need:
vanilla ice cream
chocolate chips
large marshmallows
licorice rope
gum drops
Optional: small peanut buttercups
Directions:
Prepare the snowman materials by pouring chocolate chips into a bowl and cutting the licorice ropes in half.
Scoop one large ball of vanilla ice cream into each dish. On top of the large ball, scoop a medium-sized ball of ice cream.
Have your child stick chocolate chips into the marshmallow to make eyes and a mouth. The gumdrop can be placed in the middle for a nose.
Place the marshmallow on top of the ice cream scoops and place chocolate chips in the ice cream to make buttons. Optionally, you can place the small buttercup on the top for a hat.
Enjoy before Frosty melts!
