DIY: File Cabinet Planter

By Heather @home_modern

We’ve had plans to totally revamp our backyard for a while now, but in the meantime have basically ignored it. I’m slowly getting into the spirit and one of the first things I wanted to do was to fill a few planters with bamboo for some screening. I thought it would be easy to find some straight up and down rectangular planters for a reasonable price. Not only is it hard to find a plain rectangular planter, but large planters are seriously expensive! Case in point this planter I fell in love with from Room & Board.

So basically if I wanted five or six of these things, we would need to take out a second mortgage… That’s not going to work. Then I Googled around and found these planters made out of upcycled file cabinets–genius!

I think these are so cool! And I’ve seen old file cabinets all over at thrift stores for under $10. I found a good tutorial on how to paint and reinforce the cabinets so they’ll work as planters. Check it out here. You can paint them any color you want, or add a striped pattern if you’re really adventurous.

XO,
Heather
