Discoveries seem to be the real deal in our modern world today. It is the backbone of the recent technological advancement and economic growth across the globe. From the invention of writing materials from the papyrus leaves to the graphical and note taking interfaces widely used in our handheld devices, the use of the floppy disk technology to the little known cloud technology today. It is nothing but true that new discoveries are the lifeline of our ever-evolving and technological driven world.

From the ravishing Garden of Eden to the present chaotic and tension soaked world we live in today, men have always been in the hunt to prove man’s existence, sustain it, or possibly elongate it through research and amazing discoveries. The main question is whether discovery is still a relevant ingredient in our nation’s development today.

Discovery, as old as the word itself was first adopted in the year 1529. The Discovery day is formally observed as a legal holiday in many states of the United States in commemoration of the landing of Columbus in the Bahamas on 12 October 1942. With the world turning to discoveries for economic and financial uplift, it looks like our dear nation is self-contained and pays little or no attention to discoveries of whatsoever phylum. Global scientists, economist, technologists and strategists are rigorously in search of new discoveries towards the development of the world.

It is pathetic to say that Nigeria is gradually dilapidating in contrast to other developing nations like China, Brazil, just to mention a few, in recent years. All this can only be attributed to the neglect of this global language ‘discovery’. The horrendous and ebbed state of ours continues to startle me and remain nothing but an enigma to me. A country blessed with prolific resources, and at a time referred to as the cosmopolitan of Africa, it is unfortunate to stress that she has sufficiently failed in her responsibility towards its citizenry and resultantly lost her place and image among her counterpart.

A country blessed with the needed wherewithal and financial capability to tackle her ever-increasing challenges and obstacles, it saddens that her citizens continue to wallow in abject poverty and unfathomable penury. All strata and quota of the nation’s economy is at a state of woe, no thanks to embezzlement and misappropriation of funds by our political office holders. I wouldn’t like to recount on the timeline of several corrupt practices and a dossier of mismanagement incidents associated with our leaders. Our international representation is not in tandem with our national presentation. We ratify a lot of foreign policies and initiatives, but we never domesticate them. Our government policies are nothing but a disjointed harangue. We continue to put square pegs in round holes all in the name of political influence and godfatherism. Little or no effort is put to discovering human and capital resources in the nation, but a lot of money is spent on meandering the archaic and depleting resources. Nothing is done logically and with due process, it’s all political and bureaucratic. We continue to spend hours on deliberations and conferencing hoping to stop a self-invented problem. We continue to live in religious hoo-ha, economic recession, technological misprision and political mayhem. All this are not only adjectives qualifying the pathetic status of the country, but also a brief indication of our devastating and degenerative state.

It has become highly imperative that all Nigerian, either young or old should sit up and reinvent their selves, discover their talents and develop them into skill. If our dear country must develop, it is high time the government embrace discoveries and adequately promote them through sufficient funding and policies. We must shun socio-cultural differences, political differences, religious inclination and ethnic or tribal belief and join hands together towards reshaping our dear country. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
