Life in 2016 is busy, busy, busy! Who has time to run errands or go shopping? You need a ride? Call Uber. You need some sneakers or a Crock-pot? Order it from Amazon. You need a massage? Use the Soothe app and a masseuse comes to your house. More and more, we expect our goods and services to come to us. Wouldn’t it be great to have a doctor come to you instead of you having to drag your sick child to an urgent care facility and waiting hours to be seen? Well, hallelujah! Leave it to a Dallas-based company to create the answer to my prayers. Mend is a Dallas-based health-tech startup that offers users healthcare on-demand through an app on your mobile device. The service delivers convenient, affordable, timely urgent healthcare to your home, office or hotel, for patients age 1 to 64. A house call is usually $199 but for a limited time your first visit is just $50! Much like an urgent care facility, Mend offers services for the treatment of common illnesses and injuries, which require prompt evaluation, but aren’t serious enough to require a visit to an emergency room. This would include conditions like flu, bronchitis, sinusitis, eye, ear, nose and throat infections, urinary tract infections, sprains, minor broken bones, cuts, boils and skin infections, to name just a few. House calls are made 7 days a week: 8am – 8pm. Mend providers are certified Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs), with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in acute care and emergency medicine – which is exactly who you are seeing at urgent care facilities.
How do you schedule a visit?
- Download the free iOS app and register as a new user.
- Request a visit time and location and a Mend provider will contact you within 30 minutes (during normal business hours) to discuss your symptoms
- A provider will meet you at the selected time and location and we’ll have you on the mend in no time If your provider feels your condition is an emergency or requires a higher level of care, we’ll refer you to an appropriate facility
Mend was launched in March 2015 by Dallas resident and board certified emergency physician, Jonathan Clarke, M.D. Dr. Clarke is a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force Reserve, and has served wartime tours of duty as a flight surgeon and emergency physician in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is the Deputy Chief of Flight Medicine for the 301st Fighter Wing, in Fort Worth. When Dr. Clarke left the service and reentered private practice he became increasingly disheartened by “the business of medicine”. One way he knows he’s on the right path is that the company has recently become an official affiliate of Children’s Health System of Texas (Children’s Health). The deal is the first of its kind in the country, where a legacy academic health system has strategically partnered with an early stage health-tech startup less than one year old.
“Mend is incredibly honored to partner with Children’s Health. Together, we’re building a future of convenient and affordable care for patients throughout Texas and beyond,” said Mend Founder and CEO, Dr. Jonathan Clarke. “Healthcare is in the midst of immense disruption unlike anything we've ever seen and technological innovation and consumer focus are at the heart of this transformation. Mend is among a growing number of healthcare startups that are empowering consumers to take control of their health, while reducing the costs of healthcare." The deal with Children’s Health will allow Mend to expand its scope of services and geographic reach throughout the state of Texas, as well as to other markets. In addition to its current Dallas base, Mend will open Frisco and McKinney bases in December followed by Southlake and Flower Mound bases in January. Other cities around Texas are planned for 2016.
