Dinosaur wine?
No, the wine isn’t that old, but the bottles all have pictures of dinosaurs on them. My 9-year-old daughter, who knows much more about dinosaurs than I do, tells me that this bottle has a Stegosaurus on it. I don’t know if there is a reason they picked that particular dinosaur for this wine or not. As far as I know, there’s no connection between dinosaurs and wine.
This wine is the 2009 Terra Fossil Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. I’ve had very little experience with Malbec. I’m not sure why. I seem to stick with varietals that I’m familiar with, but writing this blog is helping me to explore more wines. Terra Fossil suggests beef, cheese, and spicy dishes to pair with this wine, so beef tacos with cheese seemed like a good choice!
I’m getting plums, cherries, and raspberries on the nose. It’s very fruity. The palate starts with fruit, but goes to spice mid-palate. There’s a bit of oak on the finish. The wine is very well balanced. It’s very smooth and easy drinking.
This goes very well with the beef tacos. It holds up to the spice very well. I’m a bit surprised since it doesn’t seem like a real “strong” wine by itself. I think I’ll drinking more Malbec in the future. This is good by itself, and it holds up very well with food.
This wine gets my “Very Good” rating.
This wine was received as a review sample from Terra Fossil.
