Joseph Egbunike holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons), a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD), and a PhD in Criminology.

He has worked for the Nigeria Police Force for 33 years and is currently the Deputy Inspector General of Police.

Joseph served in the National Youth Service Corps as an Account Bills Officer in the Group Accounts Division at NNPC Headquarters in Falomo (NYSC).

Although his report was purportedly rejected, late DIG Joseph Egbunike led the panel that sat and accused sacked Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, in the Hushpuppi fraud incident.

He was also rumored to have quit shortly after INGEPOL, Usman Alkali Baba, drew him out as supervising DIG coordinating the previous Anambra election.
