Sean Diddy Combs has frequently found himself embroiled in controversy. Most recently, the hip-hop mogul made headlines when New York City Mayor Eric Adams requested the return of the key to the city that had been bestowed upon him. This request came amidst ongoing issues surrounding Diddy’s public image.
In September 2023, Diddy received the key to the city at a ceremony in Times Square, coinciding with the release of his album, “The Love Album: Off The Grid.” During the event, Mayor Adams humorously commented, “The entertainment bad boy is receiving the Key to the City from the political bad boy.”
However, tensions arose when the mayor’s office later requested Diddy return the key on June 4, which was subsequently returned on June 10. The mayor’s office also addressed concerns about a viral video allegedly showing Diddy assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura.
Mayor Adams expressed his strong condemnation of the incident, stating, “I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence.”
The controversy deepened with reports of multiple lawsuits against Diddy for alleged sexual assault and abuse. In May 2024, CNN obtained CCTV footage from 2016 depicting an altercation between the rapper, then 54 years old, and Ventura at a hotel. The footage shows Diddy attacking Cassie, grabbing her from behind, throwing her to the floor, kicking her repeatedly, and throwing an object at her.
Following the circulation of the surveillance video, Diddy publicly apologized on social media, acknowledging, “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that… I was fucked up — I hit rock bottom — but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable.”
The relationship between Diddy and Cassie Ventura, who had been together for many years, took a legal turn in November 2023 when Ventura filed a lawsuit accusing him of rape and physical assault during their relationship.
