Diary: Day 1 Visiting Tropical Tobago

It's not every day that Visit Tobago ask you to come and discover their island (the smaller of the two islands which make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago), so what to do? Well, I jumped at the opportunity of course! Mr Foodie was sad not to make it along...but someone has to give our cats cuddles while I'm away!.

It was a long journey, travelling from Glasgow the night before to catch an early flight from Gatwick at 10:30am UK time, arriving in Tobago, after a brief stop in Antigua, at 4pm Tobago time (9pm UK time).

Do you remember the first time you travelled abroad somewhere sunny and stepped onto the aeroplane stairs and felt that intense heat? Wow! It's so warm and humid here that it could take a while to acclimatise. But anyway, we are through passport control and on the island of Tobago!

This is my first time in the Caribbean and it's just as I imagined it to be - it's relaxed, friendly and hot! Our transport arrived and we were whisked off to our home for the next two nights - CoCo Reef Resort. After check-in and a welcome glass of fizz it was time to find our rooms...

Ah, air con! I could've happily sat here all day, just looking out the window (see below) feeling chilled out. I loved the welcome note on the bed too. 🙂

Now look at that view! Calm and serene. I can see why the Caribbean is loved. The stress just drained from me looking out to this. I'm a sucker for a good sea view!

A shower and freshen up later and it was time to meet up with the others for dinner.

Cafe CoCo, about a 10-minute walk away, was our destination. A half inside, half outside restaurant decorated in a Mediterranean style with lots of twinkly lights and tinkly water features - and citronella candles!

After guzzling lots of water, it was time to try the local beer and food. So some refreshing Carib beer and a wide menu with everything from chicken to fish and burgers.
The callaloo soup sounded interesting so I picked that, as well as the sautéed prawns.

Not the most appetising of soup colours eh, but actually very tasty - lIke a thick vegetable soup with tasty crab fritters and garlic croutons.

Then the prawns. There was lots of garlic butter with these. 😍 A simple dish, but very enjoyable. Just what was needed after the journey. I was full and ready for declining dessert when I heard the words 'rum and raisin ice cream' oh yes! They also had coconut, chocolate and pistachio - I was right in there with the rum and raisin.

All this food and excitement was too much for one day. Time to head back to the hotel and grab an early night as there's lots more to discover tomorrow. See you then!
