Dhammika Perera Named SLPP National List MP

The Election Commission yesterday published the Gazette nominating business tycoon Dhammika Perera as a SLPP National List MP that was created with the resignation of MP Basil Rajapaksa,Election Commission sources told the Daily News.

When Asked Election Commission’s Additional Secretary Rasika Peiris whether a political party can nominate someone who is not on the National List and has not run for office to fill that of an MP post, he said, “It is possible under the election law.”

“Under Section 64 of the Election Act of 1981,” he said, “the political party or the independent group to which the Member who vacated the seat belonged can nominate a member to fill that vacancy.”

Former Finance Minister and MP Basil Rajapaksa resigned from Parliament on Thursday amid the country’s economic crisis.

Basil Rajapaksa said at Thursday’s press conference held at the SLPP headquarters that he is against the 21 st Amendment bill and the appointment of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who could not secure even a single seat barring one national list seat in Parliament.
