A senior Police officer said that investigations have revealed the details of a number of robberies carried out by a group of Police officers from the Kelaniya Division Criminal Investigation Unit, who kidnapped three people, including a woman, returning from India and robbed more than Rs.10 million in cash and gold.
Investigations have revealed that this Police team has been engaged in similar robberies by organizing false raids without the approval of higher authorities.
Investigations have also revealed that they targeted people engaged in illegal rackets.
It is said that the smugglers who illegally bring gold and other goods from abroad to this country have been targeted by them. After arresting them under unauthorised raids their money and other property have been stolen by this group.With the start of the investigation against them, the four Police officers have fled and steps have been taken to interdict them.
