Samsung announced a partnership with NFT auction platform Nifty Gateway, fulfilling a promise made at CES 2022 to include NFTs in its televisions. According to a press release, Nifty Gateway is now “connected with Samsung’s NFT platform,” enabling users to “browse, display, and interact with NFTs” on Samsung’s “2022 premium tvs product lines such as QLED and Neo QLED TV.” The Frame and Micro LED TVs from Samsung will also have a Nifty Gateway app.
In other words, your Samsung TV will be able to display NFTs. According to Decrypt, you can even buy or sell them, however, it’s worth noting that Nifty Gateway has a far tighter policy on who is allowed to sell artwork on its site than OpenSea, the most well-known NFT marketplace.
When an NFT is shown, Samsung’s televisions “optimize the settings for an authentic depiction of the artist’s concept,” according to a broadcast statement. That’s excellent news; I’d be horrified if this NFT (created by one of the artists featured in Nifty Gateway’s press release) didn’t show pixel-perfect accuracy on my Samsung TV.
Samsung’s Smart Hub will include the Nifty Gateway, and Samsung seems to want you to utilize NFTs as ambient artwork. Assume you’re watching The Social Network and have decided to switch it off in protest of Mark Zuckerberg’s treatment of Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. Your TV would then enter Ambient Mode, showing artwork from your custom gallery — which you could populate with NFTs through the Winklevoss twins’ site, Nifty Gateway. Is Samsung’s integration of NFT a lovely screensaver? No, That is how things will be in the future.
