The weather was wonderful when I was in Denmark, which is why most of my photos will remain in color. I based the photos on colours at least 75% of the time — pops of red berries, bright yellow boats, the ombre of faded paint on wood, the contrast of houses in a harbor.
But what about the other 25%? There were some that I knew would look better in black and white, and it’s not easy to explain why. Because true white balance is sometimes unachievable except with our own eyes? Because color is too distracting? Because then I edit less?
It’s true: sometimes I overcook. Somehow, in black and white, I poke around a lot less. I accept the image with minimal tweaking, and sometimes there’s none at all, after the conversion. For a self-confessed Chronic Revisionist, this is rare.
Now, the other dilemma is whether to show the original color versions. I’ll think about it. They’ll end up in the album if that’s the case.
I’m going to take minimalism one step further: no labels. For the record, most of the batch were shot in Copenhagen (13), the rest in the area of Vordingborg (5).
