What is Dementia?

Dementia is not a single disease, it is a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with an individual’s daily life.  It covers a wide range of specific medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. It is also called as major neurocognitive disorder and disorders grouped under this condition are caused by abnormal brain changes. These also affect feelings, behaviour, language, judgment, and relationships.

It affects 60-80% of people. But there are also various other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia and in these conditions some are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin related deficiencies.

What are the causes of Dementia?

Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells to or loss of these cells and their connections. These brain cells are unable to communicate with each other which then affects the feelings, behaviour, and thinking. The brain has different regions and is responsible for different functions like memory, judgment, and movement. When the nerve cells of a particular region are damaged it affects the functioning of that region.

For example, in Alzheimer’s disease there is a high level of certain proteins inside and outside brain cells that affects the brain cells make it hard to stay healthy and to communicate with each other. The brain region which is responsible for learning and memory called the hippocampus is often the first to be damaged. This affects the neuron connections with each other, called synapses from where the messages passed along in the brain.

What are the symptoms of Dementia?

Symptoms of dementia start slowly and gradually get worsen. These may vary and depends upon the cause. These are more common as people grow older (at the age of 85 or older may have some form of dementia). It is not a normal part of aging but in some of the cases people live into their 90s and beyond without any signs and symptoms of dementia.

Here are some of the common symptoms include:

  1. Problems with short-term memory loss
  2. Keeping track of a purse or wallet
  3. Paying bills
  4. Planning and preparing meals.
  5. Can’t remember appointments
  6. Cognitive changes
  7. Loss of memory which is noticed by a spouse or someone else
  8. Difficulty in communicating or finding words
  9. Difficulty in reasoning or problem-solving
  10. Difficulty in handling complex tasks
  11. Difficulty with planning and organizing
  12. Difficulty with coordination and motor functions
  13. Confusion and disorientation
  14. Psychological and personality changes may occur
  15. Depression, anxiety, stress
  16. Inappropriate behaviour
  17. Paranoia
  18. Agitation
  19. Hallucinations

2. Tagaradi Churna:

Tagar (Valeriana wallichii) is the main herb used in the formulation of this herbal churna. This herb has been used in Ayurveda for many ages for the treatment of brain-related disorders. This churna also shows good results in neurological, psychological, and digestive disorders. It provides strength to the nerves, and prevents convulsions. As per Ayurveda, it pacifies the vata and kapha dosha and improves the quality of sleep. This churna also reduces stress and mood-related disorders.

Recommended Dosage: Take 1 teaspoonful twice a day with normal water.

3. Nerve up tablet:

Nerve up tablets balances the vata dosha as well as kapha dosha and stimulates the nerves. It regenerates the cells and improving the working of the central nervous system. The ingredients present in it are shudha shilajeet, shankh bhasma, abhrak bhasma, shudha kuchala, praval pishti, etc. These herbs boost up the memory power and reduce stress. Being an immune-modulator it also increases immunity.

Recommended Dosage: Take 1 tablet twice daily.

4. Rasayan Vati:

As the name suggests, rasayan vati acts as a rasayan for the body. It is a herbo-mineral formulation that contains various herbal ingredients like Shilajeet, Musali, Abhrak Bhasam, Aswagandha, Amla, Shatavari, Brahmi, Praval pisti, Kaunch Beej, Mukta pisti, Saunth, etc. These are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, and immune-modulator in nature. These are the best herbs for treating General debility, and psychological related disorders.

5. Detox Premium Powder:
