Deep Cleaning Your Child’s Bedroom

By Upliftingfam @upliftingfam

Bedroom Full Of JunkDoes your child’s room need a deep cleaning?  Does their room look similar to the one in the photo?  If your child’s room looks similar to the photo then it is time to help them get their room organized and give their room a makeover.  From time to time it is important for you and your child to purge and get rid of any items that they no longer use or play with.  Get your child to help you clean and reorganize their room.  In fact, my older kids clean up with room often but they tend to hang on to things that can go into the trash or that they can get rid of.  I remember when they were younger every few months I would have to go through their toy boxes.  I couldn’t believe how many happy meal toys or small gadgets that would wind up in the bottom of the toy box or the amount of broken toys that were hiding in the closet.

Disclosure: These tips are my own opinions and are based on my own experiences.

So lets get started and tackle your child’s room:

  • Trash – I know that my kids seem to hoard their papers from school or other things that can go into the trash.  As you are scanning their room, immediately throw away any trash that you see on the floor.  This will help you get rid of some of the clutter in their room right away.
  • Purge Old Toys – As you are cleaning up your child’s room and reorganizing their possessions, it is important to get rid of any toys that they no longer play with or toys that are broken.  If your children are smaller and you find toys that came from happy meals, you can recycle these.  Most kindergarten teachers love these toys to give to their students when they are on their best behavior (most teachers have a treasure box).  Take them to the school and donate them to a teacher in need.  If the teachers don’t want the toys, at this point you can toss them into the trash.  If you have other toys, games, or books that your child is no longer using then you can bag those up and donate them to charity, give them to someone who could use them, or save the items for a yard sale.
  • Purge Old Clothes – Go through your child’s clothes and determine if there are any clothes that no longer fit or have holes in it.  Get rid of any clothes that have holes or major stains.  This will allow you to determine if your child needs any new clothes.  If you have any clothes that your child can no longer wear and it is in good condition, then put the clothes in a trash bag so that you can donate them to charity, someone who could use them, or save them for a yard sale.
  • Ceiling Fans – If you have a ceiling fan in your kids room, make sure that you clean it before you vacuum.  In fact, if it is over the bed you might end up having to wash the bedding as well.  I personally, take off the comforter, any blankets, and pillows off of the bed before I clean the fan.  I leave the sheets on the bed for protection.  After I clean the fan, then I strip the sheets off of the bed and wash the sheets.  The dust from the fan should have fallen onto the sheets or into the floor so that it can be vacuumed up.
  • Vacuum – Vacuum the carpet to clean up any small pieces of trash, debris, and dirt.
  • Dust – Dust the furniture and trinket items that are in their room.  Make sure that you dust after you vacuum since it stirs up the dust into the air.
  • Windows – Wipe down the windows to remove any dust.  Also, if you have blinds make sure that you wipe those down as well, the blinds can end up very dusty.  If you have curtains or other fabric window treatments, now would be a perfect time to wash them with the sheets that you took off of the bed.
  • Make the Bed –  Making the bed can dramatically change the look of the room.  It will make the room automatically look clean and tidy.  If you have pillows, neatly arrange them on the bed.

I hope that these tips are helpful and help you to overcome the daunting task of cleaning out your child’s bedroom.  If you have more than one child, I would tackle each room on a separate day so that you don’t get burned out or tired of spring cleaning.  You can also, uses these tips to clean out a toy room if you have one as well.
