Disability News and Blog Post Round-up, Words I Wheel By, 12/26/13

I wanted to fit in one more round-up before the New Year, and thankfully the Internet never fails to supply me with a steady stream of fascinating articles and blog posts about disabilities. I’ve been having fun putting together monthly round-ups of links to writing that catches my attention. Take a look at the awesome links in my the October and November Disability News and Blog Post Round-Ups and then check out the links below for some new stuff to read before you ring in 2014!

Articles

  • Why Are Glasses Perceived Differently Than Hearing Aids? – I’ve been reading The Atlantic because of their thought-provoking articles since my senior year English teacher introduced it to me. This article is no exception, tackling the idea that “all technology is assistive technology.” I agree. Do you?
  • That’s What Friends Do – In fact, the lovely people in this photo shoot just so happen to be some of my friends! I met them all this summer during my amazing experience as an AAPD intern. I couldn’t be part of the fun because my family was visiting that weekend, but I’m really proud of this awesome take on depicting disabled people in the media.
  • Disabled Pig, Chris P. Bacon, Pens Kids’ Book About Acceptance – I’ve long since been an adoring fan of Chris P. Bacon. Look at that face! I couldn’t think of a better poster-pig for disability acceptance! Someday I’ll be reading this book to my future children.

Blog Posts

  • Black and White – A Post on the Autism Spectrum – I’m lucky enough to have connected with Renée when I first started using Twitter. (Shameless plug – you can follow me here: @emily_ladau!) She is an amazing mentor and advocate and I really look up to her. Her guest post on HandicapThis! emphasizes the importance of my personal passion in disability advocacy: acceptance instead of awareness.
  • Out of the Goodness of Your Heart – This post by Judy Endow on Ollibean shares such an important message. It is not okay to befriend or include someone just because they’re disabled and you want to do a good deed. Friendship should always be genuine.
  • See Wheelchairs Reimagined As Tricked-Out Steampunk Rides – Yes, you read that correctly. This post features pictures from a design initiative to turn wheelchairs into steampunk art projects. I think the chairs range from odd to pretty awesome. Most importantly, though, one of the designers asserts that it will move people away asking “what’s wrong with you?” type questions in favor of commenting on their cool chairs. What do you think about this?

Did I miss anything you think I should have shared in this round-up? Let me know! I love new reading material!
