Day of the Horse promotes ethical treatment of horsesBy Stacey McIntyre-GonzalezIn 2004 Congress decided that December 14 would be National Day of the Horse. This special day dedicated to our regal animal friends encourages people “to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States” as was stated in a resolution by Congress."Without horses, the economy, history, and character of the United States would be profoundly different. Whereas horses continue to permeate the society of the United States, as witnessed on movie screens, on open land, and in our own backyards," the resolution reads.
Horses helped shape society all over the world and shaped our transportation system. Horses are a staple in Canada’s history as well and to this day horses continue to work, provide companionship for their owners and contribute to our economy.

"The Congressional Horse Caucus estimates that the horse industry contributes much more than $100,000,000,000 each year to the economy of the United States."Horses are a national treasure and we must make sure that their history is preserved and passed down. We must also make sure that horses in captivity are treated with the respect that they deserve and that horse meat is not being sold as food. As far as the few horses still left in the wild it is the nation’s job to protect them. The ethical treatment of horses starts with raising awareness.
