Day Sixteen The Rings Cycle – Your Historic Sporting Fact of the Day from The Daily Constitutional in London

Sunday 12th Handball
A bit of politics on the last day… Handball has been twice introduced to the Olympics in Germany. First in 1936, when Germany claimed gold; then in 1972 at Munich, with Yugoslavia victorious. In 1976 at the Montreal Games a Croatian nationalist took to the field during the Yugloslavia v West Germany match and burned a Yugolsav flag. Twenty years ago in Barcelona gold was claimed by the Unified Team, competing under the Olympic flag. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Unified Team combined 12 of the 15 former Soviet Republics.
